Nine

Allan woke up with the sun streaming in the windows of an empty bedroom. He knew where he was and remembered clearly holding Jessi in his arms through the night. But she was nowhere to be found this morning.

Neither was Hannah, he discovered after he put on his basketball shorts and checked the nursery. A quick trip to the kitchen revealed Fawkes sipping coffee and doing the USA TODAY crossword puzzle on his iPad.

“Good morning, sir. Would you like breakfast?” the butler asked. “Ms. Jessi left a note for you. It’s on the counter.”

“Coffee’s fine,” Allan said, waving to Fawkes to keep his seat while he poured his own coffee, which he drank black. “I need to go to John’s office this morning and also speak to the funeral home to make sure we’re all set for Saturday.”

“I have the car ready to go. Ms. Jessi asked me to pick her up at Hatteras Island Care Home at noon. Will that accommodate your plans?” Fawkes asked.

Allan nodded. Well, that explained where Jessi was. She must have taken Hannah to see her grandmother. “I’m going to shower and then we can leave.”

“Yes, sir.”

Allan took the note and his coffee mug back to the bedroom he was using. He settled onto the edge of his bed and unfolded the piece of paper.
